2016 Bartman Internship Awardee Yiğit Z. Helvacı
Helvacı interned at the Museum of Byzantine Civilizations, Thessaloniki, Greece, where he created
digital 3D models of the museum's collection using photogrammetry. These were the first of
their kind at a museum in Greece. The models are changing the way the fields of archaeology,
conservation, and cultural heritage examine artifacts and have made efficient data sharing easier
than ever before. Helvacı said, "Thanks to the AIA and the Bartman Internship, I have been able
to self-design and execute a cultural heritage project from scratch and gain a tremendous amount
of knowledge and experience in photogrammetry. This technique will be an integral part of my
analytical methodology during my Ph.D.-level studies that will focus on the material and execution
technique characteristic in Byzantine wall paintings". All of Helvacı's models are available on the
museum website for public viewing.
